Stott Pilates: Essential Matwork
Although this is the most basic workout in the Stott Conditioning series, it's far from easy. Stott core conditioning, which has evolved from the teachings of Joseph H. Pilates, teaches you to use your inner (core) abdominal muscles, not just the visible ones. This is abdominal training at its deepest level. If you've never seen Pilates-based exercise, imagine contracting the abdominals hard, and holding that contraction while slowly moving limbs or balancing or changing your body position--or some combination of all of these. Instructor Moira Stott uses two assistants to demonstrate while she expertly explains the form, technique, and physiology of each move. One assistant demonstrates the basic form of each exercise; another demonstrates a more advanced form. If you've never done Pilates-inspired abdominal training before but you're very strong from other ab work, you may be able to follow the advanced demonstration; otherwise, stick to the basic--it's plenty hard enough! All the exercises work the core muscles of the torso (abdominals and back); some also work the thighs and upper body. You only need a padded surface for most of the exercises, but a Fitness Circle is required for some in this 55-minute video. --Joan Price

Stott Pilates: Essential Reformer
If you're a true Pilates or Stott Conditioning fan, you may have invested in a reformer, the machine used in Pilates-based studios. This 58-minute video, the first in a series of three, shows you how to use the Stott reformer in a series of resistance exercises to help you tone and strengthen your core muscles and increase flexibility. As in all of Moira Stott's videos, she carefully explains each exercise thoroughly: how and where it works, breathing techniques, alignment, and modifications. First she demonstrates a series of exercises where you lie on the reformer and push the bar with your feet in different positions, moving the carriage. Next you do one leg at a time. Then comes a killer called "the hundreds": an abdominal exercise with 100 pulses (fast reps with tiny range of motion) against resistance from pulling on the straps. Later the straps are attached to the feet, or held with the hands, for exercises that target other muscle groups (while continuing to work the abs and back). Although this is the most basic in the reformer series, the exercises are far from easy. The camera work is excellent--you see exactly what you need to see in order to perform the exercises correctly. Stott Core Conditioning is a contemporary update of the work of Joseph Pilates, incorporating modern exercise physiology and spinal rehabilitation principles. --Joan Price

Pilates vs Yoga

The biggest difference is that Pilates uses a line of equipment that does not exist in yoga. But the theory of mind-body connection exists in both Yoga and Pilates. They also share a fluidity of movement.

The Pilates Method of body conditioning promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages and physical conditions while providing a refreshing and energizing workout.
