Pilates and Dance

by Rob Daniels

A magical union of mind, body and spirit through movement was created by Joseph Pilates. Designed to challenge your strength, flexibility and coordination, Pilates aims to put your body in perfect balance.

Pilates is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without muscular bulk. The Pilates studio became very popular with the dance community and the Pilates technique became an integral part of dance training.

Pilates has been used by classical ballet dancers to improve strength, flexibility and technique without adding bulk to muscles. Therefore, Pilates is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without muscular bulk. As more people began practicing Pilates' methods, word of his unique approach to fitness spread beyond the dance world.

Even physicians and therapists at hospitals have created systems, combining Pilates' principles with current practices, standards and research in dance and sports medicine.

From this surge of popularity, Pilates' studio soon grew to be a legendary fitness studio attracting New York's most affluent and prominent populace. No longer that enigmatic workout on strange contraptions, Pilates' reputation broke free from elitist studios and started popping up at neighborhood gyms. No longer the workout of the elite, Pilates has entered the fitness mainstream. Today individuals of all levels of fitness, who seek to develop core strength, movement, efficiency and integration of body and mind, use Pilates.

Joseph Pilates always claimed he was ahead of his time, and his legacy lives on beyond his wildest expectations. Today individuals of all levels of fitness, who seek to develop core strength, movement, efficiency and integration of body and mind, use Pilates. It is now enjoyed by millions of people all over the world and Joseph Pilates' name continues to live on.

Pilates vs Yoga

The biggest difference is that Pilates uses a line of equipment that does not exist in yoga. But the theory of mind-body connection exists in both Yoga and Pilates. They also share a fluidity of movement.

The Pilates Method of body conditioning promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages and physical conditions while providing a refreshing and energizing workout.
